Aviva Empowers Communities for a 4th Year Starting Today @AvivaCF #BeTheChange
The Aviva Community Fund Launches this week for it’s 4th consecutive year. This social media based contest puts the power into the hands of the communities around them to have a vote and make positive change possible with much needed funding. The Fund has given away millions of dollars to grass roots organizations and individuals who have come up with ideas to make positive change in their communities. You can check out previous winners here.
“I wanted to make a difference in my community for all children with disabilities, so how could I pass on the opportunity to enter the Aviva Community Fund?” said Kelly Meissner, idea generator behind 2011 Aviva Community Fund Winner Kate’s Kause. After winning $60,000 Kate’s Kause was able to build a fully accessible playground for the entire Elmira, Ontario community to use.
Starting today, Canadians can go to AvivaCommunityFund.org to submit ideas that will have a positive effect on their local community. After rallying support from friends, family, neighbours and co-workers, the most popular ideas will have a chance to be funded with the $1,000,000 Aviva Community Fund.
In the competition’s first three years, Canadians overwhelmingly answered the call proposing over 6,000 ideas and casting more than six million votes in support of causes from every province and territory.
New to the competition this year is a specific prize of up to $150,000 for Canadian community groups or charities that support homeless and at-risk youth programs. - Aviva Canada
Speaking about Change
I am really honored to be Aviva’s Quebec Speaker at the Community Fund Launch, where I where I will be highlighting some of the amazing opportunities this project gives business people and individuals to really get involved in supporting their communities.
Not only does Aviva give an opportunity to communities to grow and receive support for their positive change ideas, they also give their brokers an opportunity to support the projects in their areas. A great way for an insurance company to give back on many levels.
This competition not only uses social media to help spread the word, and allow people everywhere to support these local organizations, but it also creates a pattern of engagement that extends far beyond the contest itself. I wrote about this last year on 12 Most, and I invite you to continue reading below to learn about the 12 Most Ways Aviva Community Fund Excels at Community Giving.
You can also check out the ideas starting to appear here, and remember it doesn’t cost you anything to support a cause, just a click of support every day to help your favorite cause make it through to round two!
12 Most Charitable Ways @AvivaCF Excels in Community Giving
by Mila Araujo
What if I told you I had a million dollars to give away, and all you had to do to get part of it was to send me your request and if you could get your friends to support you, I’d hand it out? What would you do?
Well the Aviva Community Fund is doing just that, but they aren’t throwing it at you directly, they are giving it to your community so that not only you benefit, but your whole area can share the wealth, improve your life, your family’s and everyone around you.
What really sets this social good project aside from the rest is that it is not just a giveaway, its a competition. A competition that touches every single area of community in a positive way, and all anyone has to do to make it happen is embrace the idea of community. The true idea of working together and seeing the results of teamwork for social good.
Here are the 12 Most ways that @AvivaCF Excels in Community Giving
1. Its about getting what you need
Want a million dollars? Well you can’t get it yourself. You need your friends, your family, your community to get involved. Doing this instantly creates positive energy in your group. In today’s world we are often too busy to talk to each other, to take the time out to stop and connect with those around us.

The Art of Blogging – Emerging Culture in Communication #ProBlogging #HowTo
I recently decided to try a new idea in blogging. I was driving down to Blog World New York (a 6 hour drive) and I found myself really wanting to blog. It’s rare that I have such long stretches of time to simply think, naturally during this time, I reflect. When I reflect I always come up with blogging ideas, things I want to share with others. This is where my content comes from.
Unfortunately, because I was driving, I couldn’t really start writing. I decided to try something new, a “Drive Blog”. Not unlike a conversation while driving, I just turned the video on, and gave it a spin.
After recording a couple of episodes (you can watch Episode 1 here and corresponding post here), I started to think about how this integrates into my blogging, and also marveled at the the idea that anyone could have something they felt they wanted to talk about and share, to the point that they would pull out the video while driving and “blog”. By the end of that drive, I had recorded at least 5 or 6 Drive Blog’s . As I thought about all this, what I concluded is that the ability to blog is basically adopting a new mindset, a culture of sharing. Instead of just sitting with my thoughts, like I might have 5 or 6 years ago, my natural reaction to having a thought became to share – a new behavior. This is where culture comes in.
How to blog and finding ideas about what to blog about is a huge topic in social media circles. Why? Because we know content is the key to building an audience, influence, and basically anything online. Everything needs to lead to your home base, your blog. Your blog also allows others, new people to find you – via web searches. By having a rich blog you will meet the maximum number of people possible, expand your network – your prospects and friends.
Where does content come from?
I truly believe content comes from you. Sure, that sounds like an easy answer – but it’s true. You have to be creative, you have to be inspired, you have to feel like you want to share something and it has to be something that moves you enough to feel like you need to pull out a paper and pen in the middle of your day, or reach for your audio recorder and make a note, or pull out your phone and start blogging while driving.
In the 15 second “Tout” clip above, Fred McClimans, Executive Director of the 2020 Foundation discussed “Pervasive Communications”, where he passionately covered where we are in our current state of communications (you can watch the full presentation here).
He makes a wonderful point, at what other time in our history have we as people heard something and then felt the need to run out in the street and shout at the top of our lungs for the world to hear whatever it was we just heard?
Social media gives us this ability, and we as people are using it. To do this though, you have to have something to say, something to share.
The Blogging Challenge
I believe, the challenge is for people to understand that what they have to say is important. Many trying to get into blogging ask the question: How do you blog, what can I talk about, where do I get ideas?
Please listen when I tell you:
-
You get your content from your life!
-
You get your content from your thoughts.
-
No one can feed you your content, if they do, you will not be interesting, you will not be you.
-
Write and blog, and video about something you know, something you care about, something that moved you to write.
-
Read what others are doing, talk to people, listen to people, feed your brain with information and this will lead to inspiration
-
Try new things, don’t be afraid.
In business, the same applies. Here is where you can get your content from, take note, start opening your ears and eyes around you, and you will suddenly realize, you have something to share.
- What are the top conversations you have with your customers? Your colleagues? Your opponents? If these are re-occurring themes or discussions with multiple people, it stands to reason people want to know. Transition this into your blogging. Video your answers, or write your answers – do something to share this knowledge online. Use a medium that you like and are comfortable with.
- If you do not talk with people about your business, interview the people in your company who do. Same principle as #1.
- What is going on around you? In your industry, in your neighborhood, in your office. Anything interesting? Talk about this, talk about how it effects your business or community, and if you have nothing you think is worth talking about in those areas, talk about things in your community that you really like that reflect your business values.
- Share part of yourself in your business blogging practice. It is okay to share your personal thoughts as long as they might be interesting to your readers. They will appreciate knowing who they are doing business with. If you don’t know how to start with a purely business topic, start with a topic you know well: you.
The thing about Blogging is that it’s an Art.
Its not something you take a rule book out and start following directions. The rule books, the best practices, all of this helps one understand the concept, but the true gold comes from inside, from you as a person – you need to feel , like Fred McClimans suggests, that you have something to share, something so powerful that you want to shout it out for the world to hear, and this drives you to blog, to tweet to reach out.
“There’s No Place Like Home”
Tune into what those things are in your business. Find your passion – why do you do what you do? What do you want to tell people about what you do, your team, or your product? Then write. If you keep walking around in circles asking people how to blog, you aren’t going to hit it. Remember that famous scene in “the Wizard of Oz” where Dorothy ends up realizing she traveled everywhere and met all kind of people, to find something, but in the end what she really needed was right there at home?
Buckle down:
Give yourself time to think, to be creative, to be observant, then start.
You can see what Chris Brogan or Christopher Penn do, you can try and duplicate their style and follow all their instructions – that’s not what will give you the gold – they have the guideline, but their success is really in them – just as yours is in you. If you look at why they and others are so successful, it’s not because they followed cookie cutter formulas to success, it’s because they share who they are, they share what they think, they share their passion and they take chances to communicate.
They have developed confidence in what they are saying, and people want to read this. You need to tune into yourself, get some confidence about what you are saying and start producing content – what does that mean? It means share your thoughts, share your creativity, just do it.
You need to dive in, give it a try and see what happens. Lead with passion and truth – about things you know.
Then practice – your style and skill will develop.
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Eventually, you’ll get there.
Find your passion, find your confidence and take your chances – get out there now.
With that, I’ll leave you with my Drive Blog: Luck is when preparation meets opportunity. How does this apply here? You can let me know what you think. In the case of blogging, I think preparation is thinking, opportunity is in sharing.
Make your own luck, live the culture of sharing.
Strategies in Social Media – Learning the Ropes & Expanding Horizons
If you look up a definition for Social Media, you are going to find what is probably the broadest collection of definitions of any word. It would be like asking the question, what’s the best food on earth. Always a different perspective and approach to the answer. I tried the exercise for myself, here is a great example of what you might find from “The Social Media Guide” a whole collection of definitions, all centering around the same idea, but all slightly different in how they identify the key attributes and in who has written the definition.

Social Media Meets IRL – #140MTL Meetup – The Cocktail
We had an amazing evening at the #140conf Montreal Meetup, I want to thank everyone who came out, tweeted in on the hashtag, and joined us via the Facebook event page to make the evening so memorable. Following presentations by Jeff Pulver and Erica Diamond, we moved our event to the beautiful Osco! restaurant attached to the Sara B. Bar at the Intercontinental Montreal.
We had a great mix of people, some completely new to social media, and many “pro’s” blogging or using social media for business, sharing or personal communication.
It was really interesting as I got feedback from the event afterwards to hear so many people use the word inspiring.
140 Conference coming to Montreal in 2012! #140confMTL
Last Friday I had one of the most amazing conversations with Jeff Pulver, founder, and visionary of the 140 Conferences. I was so touched by my recent experiences at #140confONT and #140ConfHV that I felt I needed to bring this experience to Montreal. After some initial research, I proceeded to set up an appointment with Jeff to discuss my proposal. I was so honored to have the chance to speak with him about his vision for the conferences and what he had in mind as he “cast” the events.
Jeff really puts himself out there, in his talks at the various conferences or at different appearances he makes, but to have the chance to talk to him on the phone was truly amazing. What was most striking to me throughout the conversation was Jeff’s incredible emphasis on curating the event so that everyone feels good : presenters, participants, people viewing from home – I was so impressed by his true desire to make everyone feel at home and the commitment to his vision on delivering the event in a way that accomplishes this. This is such a gift. I can understand now , more than ever, why the energy of these #140conf events is truly incredible and can move people forward into action, into collaboration, into being the change. He sent out an email today which captured everything so beautifully: The Evolution of #140Conf: Finding Meaning .
By the end of the conversation Jeff gave me some wonderful advice, he took the time to coach me and really bring me on board. I was thrilled to receive his approval to move forward. I am now an official Brand Ambassador for 140!!
But even more special than being made an official brand ambassador (which is pretty AWESOME) was that I was truly honored that I can now call Jeff a friend and that he placed his trust in me with this event. Although he is incredibly busy – beyond what we could imagine, he took the time to spend with me. I am so grateful for that time.
I have been so touched by the out pour of support from the Twitter community: my friends, #usguys, #140Conf participants, and so many wonderful people ready to get involved and help. So for this, I want to say THANK YOU. Lets keep working together, love hearing from all of you, lets keep connecting.
We are going to plan for a Tweetup in Montreal coming in the next couple of months as a pre-event, and we should have more info to announce then!
Stay tuned because #140 is coming to Montreal, a city filled passion and multiculturalism to share and enjoy!
Looking forward to building and connecting as we lead up to #140confMTL which will bring the “Eyes of Social Media” to Montreal in 2012!
If you are interested in speaking, sponsoring, attending, learning more or being involved in any way, follow me on Twitter @Milaspage & @140ConfMTL , join the conversation so we can keep connected and make this event great together!

#140 Conferences – Closing the Gap and Connecting.
I attended my first 140 Character Conference ( #140conf ) in the Hudson Valley this past August. It started by a tweet between @mediasres51 and @abovethestatic51 mentioning the event. I had recently seen some tweets from the Long Island conference, and regrettably hadn’t been able to go, but I had this feeling that it was just something awesome, a “can’t miss”. Therefore, when I saw the one in Hudson Valley, I immediately took note and started the plan to head down. Wasn’t sure how far it was, or how to get there, but it didn’t matter : I wanted to be there.
At work, people did not really understand why I was going. Social Media is not something most people understand fully yet. I myself was guilty of this about a year or so ago. It was only when I bought my latest Android phone that I really started to see the dynamic of Twitter, and Facebook streaming on the apps that I then thought, wait a minute – there’s something here.
As I read online blogs, I started adding my favorite authors to my twitter feed, and from there everything started to expand. I started researching blogging, then I started blogging for my company, which led to engaging with people online. Somewhere along the way, I joined the conversation, and the best way I can put it is that all of a sudden it was like I had discovered a whole new world, curated by me to include people and things of interest – in my case – a very positive world, something powerful, and people who were being the change every day.
Shortly afterwards, the idea came up from my now dear friend @littleanimation51 to do a Tweetup. Inspired perhaps by what I had shared from the #140conf Long Island, I took the chance to go out there and meet some of my “Twitter Peeps” In real life (IRL) at a local tweetup that we threw together in July. @Womenonthefence blogged about it, and if you want to share the fun, here’s my flickr album . I loved meeting everyone in person.
Then later the same month, as destiny would have it (yes I said destiny – because I feel that strongly about the amazing relationships forming from these meetups) another Tweetup this time with my #UsGuys friends. This happened because my friend @997Dave sent me a tweet, next thing you know we were having a spectacular weekend full of fun, sharing and building- yes building…building of ideas, friendships, and more.Again an amazing occasion: #UsGuysMontreal Tweetup (<<and you might want to check out that link because I was “animated”
).
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6CC0orKgUs?rel=0&hd=1&w=640&h=360] Video from #USGuysMTL – so much positive energy.
This then led to a meetup with the Dragons: @RicDragon52 and @JenWDragon41 where I couldn’t have had a more wonderful time. Made some very dear friends in them, and again, I was astounded by the kindness and the synergy with these incredible people. As luck would have it, I didn’t even fully realize it much before meeting them, but it was their company DragonSearch who was hosting the #140confHV. Amazing!
So, at work when people ask me why I went to the conference, or what I am doing online, even when I answer – amazingly my enthusiasm and passion about all the wonderful things I have learned and all the great people that I have met actually alienates them more!
The Gap
Slowly, it seems, the gap between those who get it and those who don’t widens. I think of this, and I think this is such a shame – why doesn’t everyone just jump in here, its an amazing “place”. If only there was an opportunity…
Enter #140Conf: The opportunity to see what real people are doing using Social Media as a tool to connect, and the incredible value it gives when you share a message – the human experience.
My First #140Conf – Hudson Valley – The Journey Begins…
I took a few days off work and headed down to the conference. I did not really know what to expect, but I will say I knew it was going to be awesome. It was a day full of amazing presentations by people who were sharing how they used Social Media to make a difference, expand their business, expand their reach.
Some discussions were based on sharing personal experiences, there were corporate perspectives and small business perspectives – but at the end of the day, what you could take away from it all was the importance of making those connections, and the wonder of how Social Media, with its alienating name, is really just about people.
There was so much positive energy, and there were so many inspiring people - all I could think was : imagine if everyone in the world could see this, be willing to see this. To see the change that happens, the collaborations that occur, the energy that spreads – the results you can have when everyone is just communicating, thinking and open. As @JeffPulver73 , founder of the #140Conf experience heads it “Exploring the State of Now”.
In the corridor, after the present
ations I was speaking with some of the speakers, among them, @ArtJones46, @DinoDogan24 and his lovely Evelyn, also my super #UsGuys friends @LewisPoretz60 @PaulBiedermann53 . We were talking about many things, then the subject of Montreal came up. I said, “I would love to see something like this happen in Montreal” and I was so delighted when they agreed.
We need to spread this energy, we need to show people – individuals, community groups, and businesses alike, the magic of engagement. Using social for good – for connection – for true communication.
I reflected back on my days working in Montreal for non-profit organizations, imagine if things had been like this then. I look at what @JenWDragon and @997Dave10 have done in their communities by sharing with Social Media, and I feel so strongly this message needs to be shared with communities everywhere.
There are people out there, who don’t understand Social Media, who have not yet seen the magic that happens. Logging into a Twitter account, or signing up for Facebook doesn’t share this power, what does is learning from each other.
I started to work on the idea of Montreal, research the possibilities…
In the meantime, I was fortunate to have the chance to virtually participate in #140confONT. What a brilliant list of speakers, incredibly diverse and engaging. I was so thankful to be able to attend virtually. I got a sense of this angle of participation, and met some incredible new inspiring friends.
Convinced more than ever of the magic and change #140conf’s inspired,
in May 2012, let’s bring The Power of Now to Montreal.
With all the interest generated and inquiries for a #140ConfMTL since the last two 140 Conferences, I know we will have amazing engaging speakers. We will livestream broadcast in English and French – reaching more of the world’s community. We will spread the energy and more people will get it.
We will make magic using the power of now. Isn’t that what the 140 Conferences is all about?
Bridging the Gap
Jeff Pulver asked in a tweet if we could summarize what #140conf means to us. This post started as my answer, and in essence what I would say is:
As humans we need to connect, to share. This is an opportunity to share our experiences in Social Media using tools (Facebook, Foursquare, Twitter, G+, etc.) to reach out, and “make our footprint on the world”. One presenter, one story, one person, at a time.
When we connect, anything is possible. These local conferences give everyone a chance to make that connection on a human level so that we can use The Power of Now to be the change.
Bridging the gap and showing how by using technology we are actually sharing the human experience more deeply than ever before.
Jeff Pulver, please consider this my deep thanks for your vision in founding this inspiring event, and my proposal to organize Montreal 2012!
Let’s join together in spreading The Power of Now!

Communication – Infinite : What the Cuttle (fish) taught me about success in Social Media.
A Cuttlefish is not a fish at all, they belong to the same family as squid and octopus. They fascinate me; Wondrous creatures, well worth learning about. But, my story on the cuttle (fish) is not quite about the creature itself, but rather what it taught me about communication, connection, energy and possibility.
I’ve been on Twitter for several months now. While I started out using Twitter for purely business intentions, the thing I am most grateful for are the wonderful people I met and continue to meet every day.
So how does the Cuttle fish come in? I was getting ready to attend the #140ConferenceHV this week preparing for my drive down tomorrow. Incredibly excited about meeting IRL so many of my #Usguys pals, who I’ve connected with so much on Twitter that I feel as though I know them, know them as friends, as colleagues, as guides and inspiration… #Usguys, started off as a conversation, and has led to a tribe, a tribe of incredibly “joined” people.
Every experience with the people I have met through Twitter has been outstanding. In real life, they are even more wonderful than online. We have G+ hangouts, discuss things on Facebook, talk one on one. Everything is inspiring. Knowledge sharing and development of ideas is astounding. I am so grateful for every one of my Twitter friends and experiences.
So, I ask myself, how is it possible that such an amazing group of people joined together through Twitter? How is it possible that the quality of the interactions and of the people are so rich.
I started to think about Connection.
Connections “In real life” (IRL) , connections through Twitter…and how those connections develop, how they manage to grow…an environment that I have found to be filled with completely inspiring, proactive, marvelous people.
I believe that in this world we have all kinds of connections, we can follow them or we can turn from them.
What makes them successful, valuable, cherished?
The more open you are, the more of an experience you will have when communicating, learning and being with others.
Communicating with different people, traveling, and just having synergistic dialogue is such a precious experience.
Thinking about all of this, energy and connection I was reminded of a wonderful time, several years back, when I had the privilege of working as a volunteer at the Waikiki Aquarium, while I lived in Hawaii. Although my tasks were in the offices and not on the floor, every day I would make a point to take a walk through the aquarium.
Enter the Cuttle (fish) and a true lesson in clear pure communication:
There was something magical about these floating beautiful creatures. With similar characteristics to the octopus, they change color and texture to match their environment. I would watch them as they moved from sand to rock, changing beautifully, seamlessly.
Complete grace.
Intently, I watched as they hovered over the sand, near the rocks..I watched how they would flow with their surroundings, gliding, softly changing. Mesmerizing.
I wanted them to come to the glass, so I could look in their eyes, they were so incredibly captivating. I wanted to know more. So I sat, and I waited, lost in observation... they didn’t really ever come to me.
Impatient, I decided to try and “communicate” and “engage” – focusing all my energy and good intention on one cuttle. I finally drew one up out of the sand, and it came to me, not just to the glass, but to me at eye level! Beyond that, what was amazing, is I realized as I was looking into its eyes, that it was starting to change color, and the color was exactly the color of my hair.
I can’t begin to express how amazing it was to see this, and without explanation of any other kind, I will say we were communicating.
Without language, without touch- simply with energy and intention and acknowledgement.
Now that I knew what to do – every time from that day forward, I would sit at the glass and put my energy forward and the cuttle would come to my level , watch me and change.
Thrilling Engagement.
Communication goes far beyond just words, its an energy, an energy that flows between us as humans, as creatures.
Its an intention, and a willingness to put yourself out there, not just watch.
Later, I visited the Scripps Aquarium in San Diego. I hadn’t seen a Cuttle in years…I was anxious to see them again – I wanted to know, was the connection real, was there something in the communication, the ability to engage? I asked my friend to stand by and take a photo for me if it happened, a meeting eye to eye…. I focused…
And sure enough, it came to me.
The connection was there, I just had to put the intention in, the energy, the feel.
But would he also change color , like my friends in Waikiki…?
I waited…
This is as he changed color… magic.
Positive energy, and the openness to connect, really putting your energy into things, brings incredible possibility – connection.
Engage.
Looking forward to connecting with some awesome “engagers” this week, IRL, who through their willingness to share,
have opened doors to great friendships, collaborations, experiences and success.

Engagement and communication -
You can talk to Cuttle fish, but more importantly, you can connect to the people in the world around you if you take that leap. Be a part of the conversation and not just a spectator.

What do you do in the twitter stream, do you watch the stream like I used to stare at the Cuttle fish,
or do you jump in and invest your energy and intention into engaging with others?
What’s your experience?
